KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, have emphasised that strong interracial ties not only form the foundation of the nation’s strength but also serve as a catalyst for unity.
“In our multiracial society, harmony is achieved when we show mutual respect and understanding towards one another,” Their Majesties said in a post on Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s Facebook page.
“Together, let us build a more peaceful, united, prosperous future. Happy Wesak Day to all Buddhists in the country,” the King and Queen added when extending Wesak Day greetings yesterday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Wesak Day celebration is a reminder of the importance of upholding universal values that encompass compassion, harmony and peace.
In Malaysia, he said the celebration serves to awaken the conscience of society, encouraging the promotion of human dignity and sincere respect among people in the midst of diversity.
“Therefore, I urge all of us to embrace this spirit for a united and harmonious nation while preserving our inclusive traditions and culture,” he said, Bernama reported.
Wesak Day is observed by Buddhists to mark three important events in the life of Gautama Buddha – his birth, enlightenment and passing.
