Disabled man found drowned in Sg Kuantan


KUANTAN: An intellectually disabled man who went missing on Wednesday (June 11) after being swept away by strong currents in Sungai Kuantan near Kampung Tanah Putih was found drowned on Thursday night (June 12).

A spokesman for the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department said the body of the victim, Syed Alwi Syed Mohd Ali Hanafiah, 30, was found floating by members of the public at 9.10 pm.

"The victim was found 2.5km from the rescue control centre. Rescue personnel brought the body ashore in a boat and handed it over to police for further action,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the media reported that an intellectually disabled man was feared drowned while bathing in Sungai Kuantan near Kampung Tanah Putih here.

Kuantan police chief ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu reportedly said the victim had gone to the river with his brother to fish before he was swept away by the current at about 3pm. – Bernama
