Authorities urged to address parking woes at Jinjang MRT station

Due to insufficient parking space, motorists at the Jinjang MRT station are forced to park outside designated carparks, such as along roads, pickup points or parking bays for the disabled.

THE relevant authorities should look into having more parking space at Kuala Lumpur’s Jinjang MRT station due to the high demand for such a facility there.

“MRT Corp and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should consider creating more parking space where it is possible and safe,” said community activist Yee Poh Ping.

“For example, they could allow parking beneath the elevated MRT track and along the road around the existing carparks at Gate A.

“MRT Corp could consider building more parking space, equipped with boom gates and other security features, under the MRT track,” he said.

Even though there are over 200 parking bays at the three open space carparks at Jinjang MRT station, he said these fill up fast during early mornings by those choosing the park-and-ride option when taking the train to work.

Latecomers are forced to park outside the designated carpark, such as along the road, at pickup points or bays for disabled.

“As such, they are at risk of being issued summonses by DBKL.

“While there is a new DRT service at Jinjang MRT station, the working crowd is unlikely to use it due to waiting time for the DRT van,” added Yee.

With more condominium projects coming up in Kepong, he said there was a need for more parking facilities at the four MRT stations along Jalan Kepong, including Jinjang, to encourage public transport usage.

A DRT van driver at the Jinjang MRT station told StarMetro that demand from the working crowd was low during morning peak hours and high in the evenings.

“We can get about 25 users per day, from working folk, during the evening peak hours between 4.30pm and 8.30pm, but it’s fewer than five users during morning peak hours.

“Those using the DRT service in the mornings include students and patients going to Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang or those living in areas such as PPR Beringin, Jinjang Utara and Kiara Bay,” he said.

StarMetro had previously reported on Yee’s suggestion for a piece of land beside the Jinjang MRT station to be turned into a parking facility.

MRT Corp had replied saying that it was unsuitable due to height and land size restrictions.

When contacted, an MRT Corp spokesperson said, “MRT Corp acknowledges the recent concerns raised on lack of parking facilities at the Jinjang MRT station.

“We take note of the suggestions for parking beneath the MRT viaduct and along roadside areas near the station.

“We require some time to study this as an interim solution to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians are protected.”

As a long-term solution subject to approvals, the spokesperson said MRT Corp was planning to build a multistorey carpark at the Jinjang MRT Station to better serve the surrounding community’s needs.
